Facebook Detox

So...

It's been one week since I posted which made me realize two things: 1.) My life is so borning 2.) I made it a week without a Facebook!

Now the first thing is sad but true, but I am in the process of changing. My Louisville friend count is up to 14 now! Plus, I met a nice girl at church two Sundays ago. She doesn't have facebook, so I will talk about her via Twitter (just kidding, but seriously, she's cute). I am starting to get a social life of my own. It feels good. I am going to start taking membership classes at a Church and I am getting excited about having my own life here in Louisville.

Now onto the second thing. It has been one week since the divorce of Kenton and Facebook. I did receive some mean texts (by people whom I would rather not associate with) who were upset that I got rid of it. I mean, come on, have we become that addicted to a social networking site? I do feel out of the loop. So far I have missed three break-ups, one chick got pregnant, and a friend moving away. Deleting my Facebook did make me lose touch with a lot of people. Deleting Facebook also helped me with something else: it made me actually invest in people's lives to continue the friendship. Does that mean you cannot do that with Facebook? No, you can, I just had to figure it out by deleting it.

I haven't decided if I am going to go back to the Facebook yet. I like being off the grid. I also am amused by people thinking that I had a major meltdown which prompted the deletion. I know that when I do go back to Facebook (which may be never), I will spend significantly less time on it

Also, my Twitter addiction has worsened NBD

Takes a man to be a man

So working with "at-risk" kids comes with some things that are pretty rough getting used to. Whether it is hearing some awful stories about how these kids grew up or witnessing behaviors that would make the hairs on your momma's head curl; I have seen it all. I love my job and I would absolutely be doing nothing else in this world. (Ok, that is a lie. I would totally rather be the Head Auror for the United State's Ministry of Magic). However, there is one thing that grinds my gears: bad fathers.

I was lucky to grow up with a dad that was there for me. Heck, I am 23 year-old college grad living in his parents basement, and yet, my dad is still there for me. I know what it was like for my dad to be at every big life moment. I know what it is like to be able to call my dad and ask for advice. I know what it is like to ask my dad to pray for me. For many other kiddos, they don't. And frankly my dear, that pisses me off.

Fatherhood is a big responsibility that many men are not ready to deal with. There is an easy solution for that: DON'T HAVE SEX. If you aren't ready for the added surprise of a precious cherub, than zip your pants back up, take a cold shower, and move on to another activity. Simple solution.

It kills me to see my residents talk about how all they want is a dad. It is a proven fact that children that grow up with a strong male role model (like a father) are least likely to be screwed up when they get older. I am sure that you can find the actual statistic online that sounds more professional, but I was too lazy to find it. Some of these guys are just looking for someone to love them and guide them on this journey called life (that was cheesy, I know). It is a shame that the men (actually, more like boys. They don't deserve to be called men) who helped create them, cannot man up and help raise their child. Pathetic

I am not a father. I am hoping to not be one for a long time. Actually, I don't think I will be that good of a dad; but you best believe if I knock my wife up, I will be the best damn dad that kid will have. It is time to man up or shut up.

Some people will say that the epidemic of the lack of fathers in this country is a race issue or a social class issue. I think it is a lazy issue. Some guys are too lazy to raise a child. Plain and simple. It doesn't matter if you're black or white, rich or poor, you can man up and be a father.

Life, Death, Student Loans

This evening I was able to celebrate the life a fine 20 year old college student whose life was cut short. Krm is one of my dearest (and I will also say mentally unstable) friends and her stepbrother recently passed away. A few other friends and I decided that we wanted to support her and we attended the memorial service (funeral is a word that I hate). This was not my first experience attending one of these things, but it definitely got me thinking of some things. So here they are. Hopefully they don't offend:

First of all, shitty things happen. For the two people that read this might get offended for me using that word, but the word totally fits. Nobody thought that when Chino (Krm's brother) went to Perfect North to have an awesome day of skiing, that it would also be his last. It was a pretty shitty day for his family and friends. As much as we try to avoid them, shitty things happen in our life. Whether it is the massive hunger epidemic in Africa, kids being beaten and abused in America, or the large numbers of casualties of war, shitty things happen. We can't avoid it

Second, we are not perfect. As brought to your (the two people that read this) attention in my last post, I am not perfect. I do not claim to be. I see so many people beat themselves up for perfection only to fail (usually with me and a big bag of popcorn laughing hysterically). I am all about striving for your best. But when you fail, dust yourself off again and pick yourself back up dawg.

Third of all, Jesus is all. Chino was a believer in Christ, so we got to celebrate the fact that he was now in the presence of his Creator. It was awesome to hear the songs being played in the speakers. (side note: I am now convinced that you have to play a MercyMe song at every funeral ever) The songs were filled with truth. We are broken, we come into the presence of a loving and graciousl Father who gave us Son, and we are redeemed. Such awesome truth to know that we have a Savior that loves us even when the shitty things happen and when we fail.

Fourth of all, I hate student loans. I know this is random and off topic but after the memorial service, I got an email saying I am two months overdue a payment, in which I know I paid. Stupid loans.

Bad things happen a lot in this world, but we have a God that still loves us. He gave us Jesus.

Goodbye Facebook, Goodbye World

So...

Haven't blogged since it was no longer a grade for me. Anywho, I deleted Facebook so now, I need another social forum to talk about things that make me laugh, cry, or piss me off other than twitter (the 140 character limit gets pretty annoying). So here I am, on blogspot. A place, I never wanted to be, typing for people that will never read this. But oh well...

Let's start things off with why I left the mainstream world of Facebook (that may sound hipster, but I promise, I am not!)

First off, Mark Zuckerberg just looks like a douche. I mean, he can solve world hunger and cure AIDs and rescue every baby kitten stuck in a tree and I would still think this. This is mainly because of two things: 1.) The Socail Network (my disdain for Jesse Eisenberg will be a later post) and 2.) The way he looks in pictures and in the media. We get it, you are smart and most likely the antiChrist. Cool Mark Zuckerberg, real cool

Another reason, is I was tired of making sure I always looked the part of the good Christian former camp counselor that never did anything wrong. Don't get me wrong. I still am madly in love with Jesus. More today than yesterday, but I got tired of thinking if a friends post of an inside joke would make me look bad. I am human and do stupid things, sometimes in the presence of a camera (ex: New Year's Eve), but I do not need people sending me Facebook messages telling me how disappointed people I have only met once are in me. This is a stupid reason and will get the most flack from people.

The third reason for my Facebook cutoff is that it truly does run your life. I will sit a work and sometimes just creep on people, but then I act surprised when they tell me their boyfriend/girlfriend dumped them. We all do it and I am just currently tired of it. If someone hates me, I want to know the old fashioned way, by them talking behind my back and not on other's "wall". Also, if another friend gets engaged...well... I will be glad not knowing that.

I am saying goodbye to Facebook for an undetermined amount of time. It may be a day, month, a year, or FOREVER (please say that in your head like it is in The Sandlot). I hope that you will still be my friend
